Systemet var ursprungligen avsett f\u00f6r undvika kollisioner till sj\u00f6ss bland stora fartyg som r\u00f6rs av SOLAS konventionen. P\u00e5 senare \u00e5r har priset p\u00e5 mottagare och transceivers sjunkit s\u00e5 dessa blivit relativt vanliga p\u00e5 lite st\u00f6rre b\u00e5tar \u00e4ven i v\u00e5ra trakter.\u00a0T\u00e4nkt att prim\u00e4rt anv\u00e4ndas fartyg till fartyg eller fartyg till landbaserad VTS\u00a0station (fr\u00e5n englelska: vessel traffic service, svenska: fartygstrafikservice).<\/p>\n<p>Eftersom relativt f\u00e5 personer p\u00e5 land har tillg\u00e5ng till egen AIS mottagare, men vissa \u00e4nd\u00e5 \u00e4r nyfikna p\u00e5 vilka fartyg som r\u00f6r sig till sj\u00f6ss har CQ-Klubben dragit sitt \u201dstr\u00e5 till stacken\u201d och f\u00f6rser allm\u00e4nheten med AIS data som t\u00e4cker st\u00f6rsta delen av Kvarken. Mottagare och antenn finns p\u00e5 samma st\u00e4lle som v\u00e5r <a href=\"https:\/\/oh6ag.fi\/?page_id=222\">70cm repeater\u00a0<\/a>dvs uppe p\u00e5 Stj\u00e4rnhuset i Jakobstad.<\/p>\n<p>Klubben har f\u00f6rsett allm\u00e4nheten med AIS data sedan 1.12.2007, f\u00f6rst via\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aprs.fi\/#!lat=63.48330&amp;lng=22.55000\">aprs.fi<\/a> och sedan 12.3.2016 via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinetraffic.com\/en\/ais\/home\/centerx:22.4\/centery:63.7\/zoom:10\">marinetraffic.com<\/a>, klubbens <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marinetraffic.com\/en\/ais\/details\/stations\/995\">station ID \u00e4r 995<\/a>\u00a0och administreras av OH6FXZ.<\/p>\n<p>Gamla mottagaren f\u00f6r AIS var \u00e4r en 40 \u00e5r gammal\u00a0Televa 703-LYVV, en ombyggd befolkningsskyddsradio.
